New Photo From The Hunger Games

January 22nd, 2012

Entertainment Weekly has debuted this new photo of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Lenny Kravitz as Cinna in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games . In the pic, Cinna readies a final flaming flourish to Peeta and Katniss’s costumes.

Director Gary Ross told the magazine: “What Cinna was trying to do was create something that came out of District 12, out of a coal mining world, with a fresh, bold look to it. So Judianna went to this wonderful black reflective material that glistened like coal or graphite and would obviously work well in the Tribute parade where Katniss becomes the Girl on Fire.”

The Hunger Games opens in theaters on March 23rd.

November 29th, 2011

ComingSoon.net’s ShockTillYouDrop.com recently visited the set of CBS Films thriller 7500 and was able to talk to the film’s producer, Roy Lee, about his upcoming projects.

One of them is the Old Boy remake, to be directed by Spike Lee and starring Josh Brolin. “We are planning to shoot ‘Old Boy’ in March and that should start pre-production in late January,” he said. “This is a brand new script by Mark Protosevich. It is very similar to the film, but Protosevich has added new elements that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that change the story but eventually go in the same direction. The ending will be something audiences–especially fans of…

Terra Nova: Banish Him!

November 9th, 2011

Wow, I almost forgot this show even existed! Terra Nova returned last night after a baseball-related week off, but you wouldn’t know it based on how quickly it got back into its groove of being entirely mediocre. “Bylaw” gave us a look at the colony’s justice system, moved Josh’s storyline forward by an inch, and sent a message of hope to all baby dinosaurs that they can hatch healthy as long as Elisabeth keeps playing God.

Things started off as they often do on Terra Nova: near an outpost with either a…  More >>

Is Josh Schwartz a Good Fit for a U.S. Version of Misfits?

October 24th, 2011

Gossip Girl and Chuck creator Josh Schwartz can basically get anything on TV. He’s earned it. And according to Vulture, what he wants to make next is a remake of British sci-fi dramedy Misfits, which has already earned a loyal U.S. following on Hulu. Schwartz is so invested in the idea, in fact, that he’s writing the pilot script on spec, without a studio or network attached.

Someone is going to buy it: It’s a show about a group of juvenile delinquents who get hit by lightning while doing…  More >>

Filming Begins On Jack Kerouac’s ‘Big Sur’ Starring Josh Lucas & Kate Bosworth

April 15th, 2011

With an adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s On The Road currently awaiting release, someone is already stepping up to adapt another of the beat author’s famous works. Michael Polish, the director of Twin Falls Idaho, Northfork and The Astronaut Farmer, has written and begun directing Big Sur, a film based on the Kerouac novel that tells the story of his emotional troubles after gaining fame and fortune. It’ll star Jean-Marc Barr (Dogville) as Kerouac, Josh Lucas as Neal Cassady and Kate Bosworth as their female companion Billie. Big Sur will also feature turns from Anthony Edwards, Rahda Mitchell, Balthazar Getty and Henry Thomas. Read more after the break.

Deadline exclusively reported that the film has begun shooting, produced by the newly founded 3311 Productions.

Published in 1962, just 7 years before he died, Big Sur was one of Kerouac’s final novels. Unlike most of his other autobiographical works, it portrays himself – under the pseudonym Jack Duluoz – as a famous author. It chronicles several trips to a cabin in the northern California town and how he deals with emotional demons through viscerally described drug and alcohol infused madness.

While the book employs the same free-form, trademark style of On the Road, Big Sur is decidedly darker. Here’s the plot description from the IMDB:

Sudden fame and a self-destructive lifestyle were taking a toll on Jack Kerouac’s mind and body following the unparalleled success of the groundbreaking novel, On The Road. Once the handsome literary maverick and hero of the Beat Generation, Kerouac now sees only a vestige of his former self, ravaged by alcohol and drugs, aged beyond his years and tormented by self-doubt. Questioning his talent, his faith, and his mortality, Kerouac leaves New York for California, on a quest for redemption at an isolated, fog-banked cabin in the primitive landscape of the Big Sur woods. What ensues in those fateful 3 weeks of August, 1960, is both terrifying and revelatory. While Kerouac is able to find beauty and elation in his surroundings, the dichotomy of his psyche renders him unable to face his demons alone. He sets off on a visceral collision course of paranoia, sex, delirium tremors, misery and madness.

Polish’s projects have, in general, been small and personal and one gets the sense this will be more of the same. What are your thoughts on this project and the cast?

Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson Listed as Top Candidates for ‘The Hunger Games’

April 2nd, 2011

The casting for the big-screen version of The Hunger Games, to be directed by Gary Ross, has been a contentious affair. Hiring the lily-white (and very, very talented) Jennifer Lawrence for the lead role of Katniss Everdeen drew ire from fans of the novel, who hoped for someone closer to the character as she’s described in the books.

Now the producers are closing in on choices for the lead male roles, and it is reportedly down to one man for each of two parts: Liam Hemsworth is the fruntrunner for Gale Hawthorne, and Josh Hutcherson is poised to be Peeta Mellark.

Deadline says that offers aren’t out yet and there is nothing definitive at this point. All I can say is: better either of these two than Alex Pettyfer, who was once a name we heard associated with the film. Both of these actors were on the last shortlist we saw, so neither should come as a surprise. And if Josh Hutcherson gets it that might be a good thing. He’s a solid young actor. But I haven’t read the books so I’m not going to weigh in on whether either of these guys might really be right for the parts. Please discuss below.

The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future where the United States has been broken into 12 districts all controlled by a central government. Each year, the government forces the districts to select two children to compete in the nationally televised Hunger Games, a fight to the death where the winner brings glory – and food – to their district. The star is a 16-year-old named Katniss Everdeen who volunteers for the games when her little sister is chosen.

The Hunger Games is scheduled for a release date of March 23, 2012.

Joe Hill is following in the steps of his father Stephen King, and making the transition to Hollywood. His book, Heart-Shaped Box is already being developed into a big screen thriller by director Neil Jordan over at Warner Bros, Mandalay Pictures has optioned his upcoming novel Horns. In February, it was rumored that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were developing a big screen adaptation of the graphic novel, Locke & Key, for Dreamworks. Turns out that it wasn’t actually a movie adaptation after all — but instead a television series.

Vulture has learned that Steven Spielberg is involved (via: DreamWorks Television), and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Transformers, Hawaii Five-O, Fringe) are working with writer/executive producer Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, War of the Worlds) on the project.  Kurtzman and Orci have a television deal with 20th Century Fox, so the series will likely end up on one of the Fox stations with Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks television banner producing.
